The Boat That Rocked: THE TRAILER

As well as using posters, in order to sell the film to the public, and  encourage people to watch it on its release, a theatrical trailer was distributed, as shown here.

The film is evidently a feel-good film, presenting actors which we may recognize from recent 'comedies'. We are also informed, in the few minutes of watching, that it was created by Richard Curtis. For those who would not immediately know the name, mentioned are three of his most successful films, intended to appeal to the audience watching the trailer: 'Notting Hill', 'Four weddings and a Funeral', and 'Love Actually'. These are primarily 'Rom-Coms', but if this genre didn't appeal to you, then the music certainly would. Taken from the 1960's, the music alone could be reason enough to watch the film.

The trailer is full of colour, and the snippets from the film give us an idea as to the humour and fun included in it.

Distribution

The Poster

  • Images - key settings and main characters

Positioned in the centre of the poster is the bold, large font, used for the title of the film; with information about the stars, directors, and producers, of the film, in smaller print. The images, therefore, are the real key to finding out which famous faces star in the film. These images take up the whole of the poster: large in size and bold in colour. They are also quite comical too, suggesting that the film is fun and something of a feel-good factor. We also get an idea as to the era of which the film is based, due to the use of costume.

  • Narrative

We can assume immediately that the film will take place on a boat, the title of the film being, ‘The Boat That Rocked’. The title of the film, as well as the typical 60’s outfits shown, suggests that the film will involve rock music from the 1960‘s, which will play a big part of the film, and have a huge impact too. The tag-lines, ‘1 boat, 8 DJs, no morals’ and ‘on air, off shore, out of control’, also gives us a few clues about the film. They suggest a film of fun, loose characters, intended to make us laugh. We could also assume that the film could include some romance,  a prime aspect included in feel-good films.
